MAVRIC was launched in 2017 at the University of Maryland, College Park to build and foster an XR ecosystem in the DC/MD/VA metro region. Since its inception, MAVRIC has hosted three conferences with more than 1000 attendees and 250 scholars, researchers, industry experts, government officials, entrepreneurs, and creators. Today, MAVRIC is focused on three primary areas: Foster an Inclusive and Diverse Pipeline of Talent - In partnership with UMD's Immersive Design Media major, MAVRIC will ensure more young people of all backgrounds will pursue XR as a professional pathway. Support the future use of XR for Good - MAVRIC is dedicated to promoting social use cases and the research and application of XR for empathy-building, storytelling, and positively enhancing quality of life for all. Making meaningful connections - The strength of any ecosystem is dependent on a robust, diverse, and interconnected network. MAVRIC serves the XR community in this capacity by connecting researchers, scholars, entrepreneurs, developers, and users to each other through events, workshops, and other programs along with sharing pertinent resources and news. As a champion for XR, MAVRIC will promote these activities at UMD and beyond.
