Journal of Young Investigators

Journal of Young Investigators seeks to prepare the next generation of leaders in the global scientific community. By serving as a platform for undergraduates internationally to submit research, review research, and conduct science journalism, we provide a unique educational experience for all involved. We invite students from diverse backgrounds ranging from social sciences to physical sciences and engineering to serve on our staff. JYI was founded in 1997 by five undergraduate science majors whose aim was to create opportunities for undergraduates to communicate their research to others. As the first peer-reviewed undergraduate journal dedicated to international science scholarship, JYI engages students in research, publishing, and creative science communication while fostering a culture of personal and professional development. JYI draws its staff from around the world and maintains a network of experienced mentors who provide in-depth advice throughout the scientific writing and reviewing processes. We are committed to a scientific community that is open and accessible to all. Historically funded by the National Science Foundation, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Duke University, and GlaxoSmithKline, JYI is solely run by undergraduates. Our team of over 75 undergraduates and graduate students (within the first two years of graduate school) manage peer review, editing, financial management, advertising, and a social media/web-based presence. JYI Staff and contributors come from four continents, and involvement with our journal has helped prepare undergraduates for successful careers in a variety of disciplines. Former JYI staff include three Rhodes Scholars, two Marshall Scholars, a Fulbright Scholar, numerous National Science Foundation Graduate Research Award winners, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Pre-doctoral Fellow.
