educate. is a non-governmental non-profit organisation that aims to empower children and young people in Honduras through education. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America and one of the most violent in the world. 66% of the population live in poverty, the homicide rate is amongst the highest in the world. It is also a country that receives little outside support, thanks to great political instability, corruption, and an aid freeze in 2009 following a military coup d'etat. We aim to act as a catalyst, mediating between local communities and donors to empower children and young people in Honduras through existing institutions and organisations. In doing so, we acknowledge and support the agency of Hondurans, bringing awareness to initiatives run by local people that are creating change on the ground. We use our knowledge and networks in Honduras to facilitate connections with projects that correspond with our mission. We run a high school and university scholarship programme in partnership with local public secondary schools to provide an opportunity for high-potential but underprivileged students to continue their education. In addition, we support communities ins tarting school-based community libraries the strengthen existing educational institutions from within.
