UConn Journalism

journalism.uconn.edu

UConn Journalism has produced Pulitzer Prize winners and entrepreneurs; staffed the world’s top media outlets with reporters, editors, and photographers; and shaped the face of journalism in Connecticut and beyond. Our primary goal is to prepare students to become intelligent, responsible and articulate journalists, and clear, effective communicators in all forms of media. We are committed to the belief that the best journalism education combines a strong professional program with a thorough education in the liberal arts and sciences. We believe such an education helps students to hear, understand and tell the stories of people whose circumstances or backgrounds are unlike their own. We occupy a unique position within the UConn College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as the only department whose primary mission is to prepare students for a particular career. Our faculty members have significant backgrounds as professional journalists, including two Pulitzer Prize winners. UConn Journalism should not, however, be viewed as being isolated from the rest of the college or university. We remain committed to the idea that our majors need a strong liberal arts background to understand the world, and a strong journalism background to report on it. We encourage our students to study other fields in depth, and to complete second majors. We also encourage students from other disciplines to complete a second major in journalism. We offer instruction to many non-majors who want to improve their writing, interviewing and research skills, or to learn about the news media. UConn Journalism is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). Contact us at journalism@uconn.edu
