Global Book Clubs
www.globalbookclubs.orgYouth in marginalized communities around the world faced unique barriers to recreational reading. In addition to availability, accessibility, and utility, these communities must also consider durability. When infrastructure is inadequate and replacement books are unavailable, protecting conventional books from rain and other environmental factors can be too great a burden. When books are not durable, children are discouraged from using them. Additionally, water-proof books can be washed, which will aid in preventing the spread of disease. Once established, Global Book Clubs will accept applications from groups and organizations that work locally and directly with students in remote, resource-poor regions of the world. It is important to us that, 1) The student Book Club Leaders express a genuine interest in program, and 2) A local organization, such as a school, nonprofit, or women's group, is present and engaged in the project. They will act as mentors and liaisons. Global Book Clubs ultimately intends to reach any interested community, in any country, around the world. Therefore, we are seeking input from authors and literacy experts of all backgrounds. To ensure the durability of our books, Global Book Clubs will upcycle plastic waste into culturally relevant and age-appropriate children's books. Using existing technology, these books will feel and function like paper books but will be strong and waterproof. These books will be non-toxic and completely recyclable. Global Book Clubs will work with local nonprofits, schools, or other interested organizations to reach students in remote and underdeveloped regions of the world. With guidance and resources from Global Book Clubs, these partner organizations will identify and train interested students on how to organize and run a book club. With ongoing support, the student Book Club Leaders will use GBC books to run regular book clubs, organize relevant activities, and collect feedback from participants.
