The Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is responsible for managing an asset with a natural capital value of $26 billion. We strategically plan for, facilitate and manage, the development and use of the waterways so this community asset remains safe and accessible now, and into the future. The Gold Coast is renowned for its laidback lifestyle, stretches of white sandy beaches, kilometres of waterways and amazing climate. It's these elements that form the heart of the region’s recreation and tourism industries. The waterways are a significant contributor to the local economy. accounting for over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing $200 million to the local economy every year. The waterways must be protected and maintained so that they continue to enrich the lives of residents and visitors. The GCWA manages the waterways south of the Logan River to the New South Wales border. We aspire to set the standard for, and spread the principles of, world-class waterways management – emphasising environmental excellence – to improve the quality of open waterways space for the enjoyment of all. We sponsor scientific research and maintain accessibility through an annual dredging program and investment in community infrastructure such as Doug Jennings Park at The Spit.
