Spread Networks is a private company that offers dark fiber and lit services between the greater New York and greater Chicago metropolitan areas. Launched in August 2010, the network offers 12.9 millisecond roundtrip transmissions on dedicated dark fiber and 14 milliseconds roundtrip transmissions via wavelengths and shared fiber. Spread Networks claims to have the shortest and most diverse route of any network between New York and Chicago at 825 fiber miles. The system links to a segment in New Jersey between Carteret, Newark, Secaucus, Weehawken, and Piscataway as well as 11 intermediate points of presence along the route in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and New Jersey. With both premium low-latency services and price competitive wholesale services, Spread Networks markets its bandwidth and dark fiber to wholesale carriers, enterprises and financial firms. Claiming greater than 99.999% reliability since its launch, Spread markets its line as the most reliable, most diverse, and lowest latency long haul route between the two cities. In late 2012, Spread Networks boosted its backbone capacity to 100Gbps. The system now enables up to 8 Tbps of potential capacity on each of its fiber pairs without the need for any regeneration along the route.
