Alliance for International Reforestation
www.airguatemala.orgAIR’s Mission is to implement educational programs and agro-forestry methods in Central America in order to protect water sources, prevent mudslides, reduce erosion, prevent lung disease and provide more nutritious crops, while protecting the Earth. We choose Hope. AIR uses a reforestation and regenerative farming program that targets the interrelated problems of malnutrition, deforestation and mudslides in rural Central America. We have developed and utilize a comprehensive community-based and community-led program with several interrelated environmental and rural poverty components to help both indigenous Maya communities and the environment in Guatemala. Specifically, we do the following: • Reduce the impacts of climate change through reforestation using native species of trees. • Provide habitat for wildlife through reforestation. • Protect cropland, reduce mudslides and soil erosion, and improve downstream water quality through reforestation and agricultural techniques. • Improve food production and nutrition using organic regenerative farming techniques. • Reduce firewood usage and lung disease by constructing fuel-efficient vented cook stoves. • Educate children by providing curriculum, gardens and tree nurseries for rural schools. • Establish tree nurseries that can be converted to micro-businesses upon each project’s completion.
