Every eighth child in urban India lives in slums. We, being fortunate enough to have been endowed with opportunities and resources, intend to bring rays of hope, knowledge, confidence, and independence in the lives of these not-so-fortunate children. Just the way a Jugnu(firefly) sparkles against the night, we wish to show them a path towards an enlightened future- through education. Currently, JUGNU runs an education and awareness center in a community of rag pickers (sec 27, Rohini, Delhi). According to the survey conducted in the site, among 200 children, less than one third (5-14 years) were enrolled in schools. Our initiative began with enrolling children in the nearby government school, followed by regular workshops and interactive sessions. These sessions aim at basic learning, skill development, health and hygiene consciousness, exciting and fun activities for all-round development of these children. In our current batch of 100 children (approx), Jugnu members are actively involved in the sessions on a regular basis. In the immediate future, we wish to achieve a target of 100% admissions in schools as well as participation in our sessions. Through active youth participation, we will taking up water and waste management projects in urban slums of Delhi soon.
