With over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry as a textile and fashion designer, Mayes Founder, Brandy Wykes thoughtfully constructs designs with a unique twist for the modern, curvy woman. She states, “I dress women for who they are right now. Plus size is not a transitional concept. We have a whole society built on [the concept that] being thin is the only way to be.” Brandy’s love for textiles and clothing design is not only from her childhood but also ingrained in her lineage. “My grandmother sewed her own clothing, who taught my mother and aunts to sew their own clothing. They all got together and made things they couldn’t find in stores.” It was Brandy’s mom who taught her how to buy a pattern, cut it out, and make a garment. She recollects, “I knew from elementary school if I wanted something, I could make it myself.” She started sewing shorts and bathing suits, graduated to constructing her own prom dresses, and even designed and modified her wedding gown. Brandy is formally trained under Calvin Klein and also worked at Levi’s and Lane Bryant, making her an expert not only in the clothing industry but also in plus size garments. Mayes NYC is her brainchild and filling a gap in the market—well constructed, beautiful clothing for the contemporary plus-size woman.
