SPINAL CORD INJURY Spinal cord injury is a serious trauma that affects more than 2M people worldwide. The spinal cord is made up of nerve bundles that receive voluntary motor commands from the brain to the limbs and it is through this channel that the perception of sensitivities is transmitted to the brain (touch, temperature, position, pain). Disabilities can occur when an injury to the spinal cord damages the wiring responsible for transmitting these nerve impulses. The trauma affects the motor and sensory functions of the patient and paralysis sets in without any possibility of full recovery or returning to one's physical state before the accident. Today, there is currently no treatment to overcome this paralysis and restore nerve sensitivity or the ability to walk again. INNOVATIVE NEUROTECHNOLOGY NEUROBIOMAT (NBM) is a start-up resulting from pioneering works of R&D on biomaterials for neural tissue engineering carried out by Doctor Stéphane Woerly which aims to provide an innovative solution for repairing the damaged spinal cord. NBM has developed an implantable device - SPINEREP - intended for the functional repair of post-traumatic lesions of the spinal cord through a tissue engineering approach, by targeting the restoration of damaged nervous networks responsible for the transmission of nerve impulses. NBM's know-how and intellectual property are based on a patented technology which shapes polymers into three-dimensional scaffolds. SPINEREP is a flexible and porous, biocompatible polymer biomaterial which, once positioned surgically at the level of the lesion, allows the regrowth of nerve fibers and their connections across the lesion cavity by playing the role of a growth-promoting template as well as neural tissue rebuilding.
