Founded in 2004, The Optical Foundation is a non-for-profit organization that runs projects to provide comprehensive eye examinations for children in Ghana, to detect and treat eye disorders as early as possible. An important component of these projects is that they include a practical experience program for Ghanaian optometry students, allowing these students to gain the practical experience to help them become the future specialists in their own country. Our ultimate goal is for this to become a self-reliant eye care program and in this process there is a delicate balance between providing help and creating a framework to empower a community to help themselves.
