Programme Overview June 2021 marked a new beginning for the Nightingale Challenge as it became the “Nursing Now Challenge”, under the continued leadership of Professor Lisa Bayliss-Pratt at Coventry University, in partnership with The Burdett Trust for Nursing. The Nursing Now Challenge is carrying forward the ambitious mandate of the Nightingale Challenge, working with health employers as well as universities and colleges around the world to create leadership development opportunities for 100,000 nurses and midwives in more than 150 countries by the end of 2022. Coventry University’s use of technology enables people to access education resources and collaborative opportunities regardless of geographic location. Approach All employers of nurses and midwives are encouraged to take part in the Nursing Now Challenge by providing a leadership and development programme for nurses and midwives. The Nursing Now Challenge is also open to nursing and midwifery students and we urge universities and colleges to provide leadership development training to supplement their curricula. This is an opportunity to be part of a great global movement to develop nursing and midwifery. Taking part in the Nursing Now Challenge enables employers and universities to maintain and enhance their reputation, externally and with their own staff and students, for investing and championing nursing and midwifery. As the world struggles under the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing is clear – investing in the nursing workforce, improving nursing recruitment and retention is vital to protect health globally.
