Colonial Folk Art Studio and Gallery

www.colonialfolkart.gallery

Art to buy. Art classes to learn. And an art studio to create. As the Colonial Folk Art Studio & Gallery implies, there are two major components to the business – a studio and a gallery. Our studio is set up for artists to create using most art medias – from drawing to ceramics. For ceramics, we have two kilns, two potter’s wheels, a slab roller, an extruder, and a great space to come make a mess in our studio instead of home studios or kitchen tables. Our gallery is full of eclectic one-of-a-kind pieces of art that span from purely aesthetic and innovative to funky and functional. Most of our artists are local or from the Southeast. Our open studio is open to anyone who wants to come in and use studio space and our equipment for a set rate. Best of all, our Artist-in-Residence Beverly Burgdorf is there to help artists who may need or want some advice, help or just want to exchange ideas and techniques. Our artist-in-residence teaches classes in mixed media and ceramics. Classes are geared to students of all levels. Beverly works with beginners, experienced artists and even those who think they don’t have an artistic or creative bone in their body. As a former pre-K through 6th grade teacher, she can make it simple enough for anyone. We provide all materials for our classes, including firing of ceramics. By definition, folk art is “people’s art.” It is colorful, fun and remains very affordable to buy and collect. Original pieces of art are often less than a poster or print from a large retail store. Our artists span from local favorites to vintage folk masters (e.g. Howard Finster, R.A. Miller. Mose T, Purvis Young). Many pieces are functional such as Williamsburg-made ceramic bowls and hand-carved utensils. Others are purely aesthetic "happy art." All pieces are unique and handcrafted.
