clubs.soe.uoguelph.caGNCTR Guelph is a student engineering team from the University of Guelph. The team competes in an annual competition known as the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) originating in 1974. The design-build competition requires competing teams to fabricate a toboggan with concrete running surfaces. The toboggan is required to weigh under 350 pounds, carry 5 competitors, have steering and braking mechanisms, and a roll cage. The team of 30+ interdisciplinary engineering students work cohesively to apply project management and project planning skills to complete the building and conduct the appropriate testing of the toboggan. Team members have opportunities to build technical skills, as well as soft skills essential to team projects. Technical skills include concrete design, welding, SolidWorks design and simulation, and construction safety among others. Soft skills that are developed include report writing, teamwork, organization and time management, professional communication, problem solving, and working with tight deadlines.
