First Metro Housing Company is the first Social Housing company in the city of Durban. The Company is involved in the development and management of social housing in the eThekwini (Durban) Metropolitan region of South Africa. The company's primary purpose is the development of quality and affordable residential rental accommodation for the low to medium income households The company was established on the 2nd December 1998, as an independent Section 21 Company (non-profit organization) and is managed by a Board of Directors. The organization was initiated by the eThekwini Municipality out of the twin city relationship with the city of Rotterdam. The Company was awarded the KwaZulu Natal Housing Developer of the Year Award in 2002 by the Institute for Housing in recognition of the Company�s achievements in housing provision and it�s pioneering efforts in the lower to middle income rental markets. The Lakehaven Social Housing Project, developed by First Metro Housing Company was awarded the coveted Social Housing Project of the year 2011 award by the Southern African Housing Foundation (SAHF). First Metro is deeply honoured to receive this award and grateful to SAHF for recognizing its efforts in providing quality affordable housing accommodation. The SAHF award is the testimony to the efforts and long term commitment of First Metro in providing quality affordable housing. This award was made possible to the collective efforts of the Board of Directors, Staff Members, Professional Teams, Stakeholders, Tenants and local communities. This award reinforced our commitment to grow from strength to strength in ensuring the delivery of quality affordable housing accommodation and family orientated communities through the strategic positioning of families within social and employment opportunities.
