Manitoba Chamber Orchestra

www.themco.ca

The MCO is “Canada’s tiny, perfect chamber orchestra” (Toronto Star). We tour widely, commission often, embrace a diverse repertoire, and collaborate regularly with the world’s leading soloists, from James Ehnes to Measha Brueggergosman. The orchestra, boasting a roster of some of the finest orchestral musicians in Canada, has been praised for its “satiny sound … dynamic subtlety, and an impeccable sense of ensemble” (Ottawa Citizen) and called “an excellent string ensemble con ducted with crispness and verve by Anne Manson” (San Francisco Chronicle). Established in 1972, the MCO presents at least nine concerts annually in Winnipeg. The MCO wants all Manitobans to experience the joy of orchestral music regardless of socioeconomic, cultural, and geographic barriers. To this end, we offer an annual program of education and outreach that has remained impactful and evolving despite the pandemic. In a conventional year, we offer dozens of free satellite performances in libraries, outdoors, penitentiaries, schools, and hospitals; we offer complimentary tickets to our Westminster concerts for hundreds of students, newcomers, individuals living with mental health challenges; and our Fiddlers on the Loose ensemble tours remote parts of the province. Through the pandemic, of course, we have moved much of our concert, education, and outreach programming into the virtual realm, and are currently combining online and in-person presentations. In 1995, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra became the first North American orchestra to release a record with Sweden’s prestigious BIS label. Since then we have recorded nine albums, three of which have earned JUNO nominations. In 2019, the MCO were named Classical Artist/Ensemble of the Year at the Western Canadian Music awards. We were nominated for the same award in 2020. The MCO operates on an annual budget of about $1 million. Interested in learning more or supporting the MCO? Please contact the MCO at info@themco.ca.
