The vision of Gilda’s Club Kansas City (GCKC) is “so that no one faces cancer alone.” We accomplish this through our mission—to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. GCKC achieves our mission using an evidence-based, five-part program model that incorporates education, wellness, support, resource and referral, and social connection supporting our participants. GCKC presents educational workshops featuring experts from various disciplines, providing information on topics such as treatment options, side-effect management, financial and insurances guidance, and post-treatment management. We also offer healthy lifestyle classes, that demonstrate appropriate ways to engage in exercise, nutrition, expressive arts, and guided meditation. Short-term individual, family, couples, and grief counseling are offered, as well as support groups. Groups are offered separately for those living with cancer and those actively caring for someone with cancer. Additionally, if someone is seeking specific cancer information, community resources, or other professionals with whom to discuss their questions or concerns, GCKC can provide resources, referrals, and connections. Three aspects make the GCKC model truly unique. First, each aspect of our program is supervised by a licensed mental health professional. Our programs are offered free to participants. Lastly, our programs are open to anyone with any type of cancer, regardless of health system. During the COVID-19 crisis, GCKC shifted programs to Zoom, HIPAA compliant video conferencing. Serving over 2,200 people annually, GCKC has only seen an increase in program attendance since moving to an online format. GCKC is the only organization in the area devoted solely to providing this support, education, and hope to cancer patients, their friends, family, and children. GCKC serves all of Missouri and Kansas.
