Floriana Football Club
www.florianafc.comThe game of football in Malta originated from the influence of the British in Malta way back in the end of the 18th Century. At the moment the islands were occupied by the British forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) in the centre of the Mediterranean. The British had their Barracks spread around Malta, mainly in the harbour area (the old three Cities of Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa, Mtarfa, Sliema, St.Andrew’s, Floriana and Valletta). Each Barracks had a parade ground which was used by the British forces for parades, training for soldiers, and for sport activities like Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Football. The Floriana residents used to observe what the British forces where up to and when the solders where on leave, they used to meet up and share ideologies and customs. Football was the most favorite sport for the Floriana residents, although there were some who enjoyed Cricket and Hockey as well. At the end of the 18th century, a group of Floriana youths formed a football team who represented the Floriana District and started challenging other teams, especially those of Cospicua, to football matches. In fact, one of the most documented matches of the earlier days was between St George’s team of Cospicua and Floriana team in 1894, with the former winning 1-0. Proof of this match can be found at St George’s FC premises where a team photograph dated to this year is present with one of the players holding a script acknowledging that they were the first team to beat Floriana (We are the first winners to Floriana).Floriana FC adopted this year 1894 as its foundation.
