Becoming a Smart City is already too small an ambition for some cities. Such as Eindhoven. In Eindhoven people are saying: "Let's not focus on the infrastructure. Let's ensure people are included in connecting everything to the Internet". The previous mayor Van Gijzel frequently said: "There are no smart cities. Only smart people". Visions that are being developed, focus on Smart Society: domains where the application of ICT makes a difference to peoples' lives. Think of Smart Learning. In the current market configuration, the demand of the students (e.g. for a less traumatizing way to write their thesis) is frequently decoupled from the decision making. In educational institutions the 'make or buy'-decisions for such programs or services tend to be a least three to four levels removed from the actual demand. There are people who supervise the students, there are coordinators who supervise the supervisors, there are department heads who manage the coordinators and there's the IT department who may or may not get input from any of the people mentioned before. Venturespring advises Municipalities and Institutes on Smart Society developments. We come from pioneering web technology in a multinational. More recently we have worked with the Municipality of Eindhoven, creating a framework for Smart Society development and co-developing the IoT Charter for Smart Society. We have also invested in developing a prototype for SmartLearning, aiming to experience first-hand how difficult it is to develop solutions for Smart Society. We are now piloting our on-line thesis working environment UgoStudy with Studiemeesters, our national partner in the Netherlands. We also think SmartInnovation on a regional level is worth pursuing. That challenge is even greater, as the current market configuration usually regionally divides roles and responsibilities. With regional development cooperation Boven-Dommel we are now testing our prototype.
