In short AMHEC is the Association of Managers in Higher Education and our missions statement is to: Promote and encourage outstanding management practice in the Higher Education sector by facilitating cross-disciplinary dialogue and the sharing of expert and professional knowledge. Membership is by institutional annual subscription and is open to any staff member with managerial responsibility in a UK HEI. Traditionally institutions who have been members of AMHEC have also been members of GuildHE and/or the Cathedrals group and although AMHEC will consider other institutions, this group remains the core focus. Because of this, members benefit from networking with colleagues at similar institutions, facing similar challenges and this is something many find invaluable. With a simple membership structure, once an institution is a member (starting from £400), individuals from that institution can then join with no additional cost and there is no limit on the number of individuals who may join. In practical terms AMHEC offers members the following: • Two major annual events; an ‘on-tour’ day and an annual conference • An email discussion board on JISC mail, which encourages members to ask advice from and share knowledge with other members • Regular communication from the Exec board on any pertinent issues affecting members and sector news Our ‘on-tour’ day offers a fantastic opportunity for members to visit and get to know more about one of our member institutions and this year will be held at Newman University in January. The annual conference, held around Easter each year, is always the highlight of the year and we have been privileged in previous years to have a diverse range of speakers from organisations such as GuildHE, HEFCE. This year will be no different and the conference is due to be held, 12thand 13th April, at Chester University. AMHEC prides itself on facilitating honest and open dialogue and our members tell us that they particularly benefit from our events as their relative small size, enables sharing and meaningful discussion to take place. As part of the AMHEC network our members can build strong and effective working relationships.
