One third of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. One unanticipated financial setback results in a downward spiral that can end in homelessness. Apartment Angel is the only national organization that prevents apartment evictions through an innovative lending program. Our solution provides an interest-free loan for one month’s rent to qualified apartment residents experiencing an unanticipated financial hardship. The loan is paid directly to the property on behalf of the resident. The residents then repay their loans to Apartment Angel over a period of 6 to 12 months. The majority of our clients are the working poor, living paycheck to paycheck, who simply need a hand-up to help them get back on their feet and avoid the impact of being evicted from their homes. The Apartment Angel idea originated while high school student Archer Chapin was working at a local soup kitchen in Washington DC. Over time he saw a number of the people receiving aid were hard working apartment residents whose lives had been turned upside-down by an unforeseen, short-term financial hardship (usually medical or job related). Living paycheck to paycheck, they had no way to cover their extra expense and were evicted from their homes and forced into homelessness. It became clear to Archer that a simple hand-up was all these good people needed to avoid this situation. He convinced his family that the 5 apartment complexes they owned should test his loan concept by providing one-month loans to their good tenants in need of help. In April 2104, Apartment Angel received its 501 (C) (3) certification and began to offer its services to other communities.
