BRiTEN - Building Rural Incomes Through Entrepreneurship
www.britentz.orgBuilding Rural Incomes Through Enterprenuership is a social enterprise that is non-profit making dedicated to increasing incomes and improving livelihoods through empowering rural agribusinesses (farmers and entrepreneurs). BRiTEN specializes in agricultural development initiatives, designed to facilitate market access, enhance agribusiness competitiveness, increase productivity and improve access to inputs and finance. BRiTEN works in collaboration with Government and other private sector partners in developing market systems, by addressing underlying causes of weak performance in order to unleash large-scale and systemic change. As part of our work, we bring about a paradigm shift among smallholder farmers by them seeing their agricultural livelihoods as going beyond providing for the family’s subsistence needs and moving into a business-minded frame of mind that harnesses competitive advantage. Our model aims at improving the efficiencies and quality of product flow from the farm-to-markets with the objective of increasing smallholder incomes and productivity. The key to this is to change the attitude, knowledge and skills of farmers in having them reach a level where they are able to infer and understand the market conditions and are able to access high value markets through collective selling as well as access agricultural inputs for production. Our model is multi-faceted and involves a change in farmer practice: from using farmer saved seed to using improved seed varieties; from using appropriate fertilizers; by reducing workload of weeding through the use of herbicides; by increasing farmers access to agricultural inputs closer to their farms and at the right time through creating enhanced synergy between the Importers/Large suppliers and the agricultural input retail distribution network in the districts and villages; and by creating efficiencies and ensuring quality of product flow from importers to the farmers.
