Stella’s Circle transforms lives by offering Real Homes, Real Help and Real Work. The organization is named for Dr. Stella Burry, a pioneering social worker who made an outstanding contribution to her church, community, and province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Working with the United Church of Canada, she introduced a community development approach to St. John’s and in 1945 founded Emmanuel House to provide food, shelter, friendship, and counselling. In 1995, the organization incorporated and eventually expanded to become Stella's Circle. Stella’s Circle offers services for adults who have faced challenges that prevent them from full participation in our community. These challenges are often combined and include: poverty, mental and/or physical health concern, history of conflict with the law, addictions, history of abuse or neglect, homelessness, incarceration, illiteracy, interrupted education, learning disabilities, limited or broken work history. Stella’s Circle helps people change their lives for the better by offering: 1) Real Help - Stella’s Circle offers a range of residential, community, and correctional-based counselling services to support people through life’s challenges. Our services help people to achieve higher levels of personal independence and self-reliance. Services in this area include Emmanuel House, a Community Support Program & the Just Us Women's Centre. 2) Real Homes - Safe, secure and stable housing is essential. Stella’s Circle helps address the need for affordable housing and emergency shelter. 3) Real Work - Stable and meaningful employment is an important contributor to physical and mental health and quality of life. Our services include Social Enterprise Training and Education such as a food service program, a trades program and a cleaning program; Employment programs and Education programs such as ABE.
