UK Biocentre provides a centre of excellence for biomedical research to the academic, pharmaceutical and biotech research community. UK Biocentre was established in 2011 as the service arm of UK Biobank, a national research initiative that collected biological samples and data from 500,000 UK volunteers. UK Biobank is regarded as the world’s premier biobank and implemented an industrialised approach to biological sample processing and management that is now available, through UK Biocentre, to the international scientific research community. UK Biocentre exists to support global biomedical research providing world class sample processing, storage and analysis services. UK Biocentre’s storage facility provides access to automated sample storage systems from the world’s leading automated storage system providers, in addition to conventional -20°C, -80°C and -196°C cryostorage systems, for the storage of biological fluids, tissue and compounds. Extensive sample processing robotics provide platforms to process blood and other biological fluids into their constituent parts, to desired volumes and concentrations, under environmentally controlled conditions. A wide sample analysis capability exists including high throughput nucleic acid extraction, genotyping, sequencing, biochemical assay and immunoassay.
