Justice Innovation Lab builds data-informed and community-rooted solutions for a more equitable, effective, and fair justice system. JIL’s team of data scientists, visualizers, human-centered design experts, prosecutors, policy makers, community advocates, leadership coaches, and law enforcement professionals support local leaders in identifying unfair procedures and practices and developing effective alternative solutions. Redefining what it means to achieve justice requires new tools, new skills, and a more holistic approach to achieving safety. JIL helps communities improve their justice systems by harnessing the power of data, facilitating values-driven decision-making, and sparking innovative solutions. We believe real reform efforts must start with the most influential actors in the criminal justice system: prosecutors. The 2,300 prosecutor’s offices across the country bring 95% of all criminal cases in the United States. Prosecutors have more power and discretion than any other actor in the criminal justice system, particularly during the time between arrest and potential conviction. They influence who is arrested and determine what charges people face. Their decisions affect who is incarcerated and who receives alternatives to prosecution. The training, tools, and preparation prosecutors receive do not adequately equip them to exercise such power justly and equitably. Through facilitated dialogue, JIL has heard time and again that offices and individual prosecutors alike are eager for access to data, technology, and experiential training that will help them understand the ways systemic injustice manifests in their work and empower them to pursue new ways of serving communities. JIL exists to fill this gap. Beginning with prosecutors as critical change agents, JIL engages communities to identify inequities and unmet needs before designing, testing, and piloting innovative solutions that advance transparency, equity, and efficiency in the justice system.
