Formed in 1950, the Dunn County Historical Society seeks to discover, preserve, interpret and disseminate knowledge about the history of Dunn County and its role in Wisconsin, and to arouse interest in the past. The Dunn County Historical Society operates a county-wide network of historical sites. The Russell J. Rassbach Heritage Museum is the headquarters of the Dunn County Historical Society. The Heritage Museum interprets the history of Dunn County through its extensive collection of artifacts and new exhibit areas. Located in Menomonie's Wakanda Park near the Wakanda Elementary School, the Lions Club Game Park, and the water park, the facility features a gift shop and new exhibits, including: The Golden Age of American Auto Design: The Doane Collection, Settlement: pre-historic to present, Kraft State Bank Robbery (interactive), Harry Miller -- "King of the Race Car Builders", Caddie Woodlawn children's discovery room, Victorian Rooms, Dunn County in the Civil War and much more. Right outside of the Heritage Museum is Hilkrest Rural School, a one-room school built in the late 1800s. Our second location is the Empire in Pine Museum, located in Downsville, Wisconsin. The Empire in Pine Museum is only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. All contact for the Empire in Pine Museum should go through the Dunn County Historical Society's Rassbach Heritage Museum. The award winning display exhibits the rich logging and sandstone quarry history of the Red Cedar Valley.
