CUPE Local 1978 has approximately 950 members and represents four bargaining units: Capital Regional District Island Health (Health Science Professionals at Vancouver Island Health Authority) West Shore Parks and Recreation Greater Victoria Housing Society Members work all across the Gulf Islands and southern end of Vancouver Island. CUPE Local 1978 is affiliated to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), a Canadian trade union serving the public sector, non-profit and para-public sector as well. CUPE is the largest union in Canada, representing some 650,000 workers in health care, education, municipalities, libraries, universities, social services, public utilities, transportation, emergency services and airlines.
