The School of Construction Economics and Management is located within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, a Faculty that was created in 2001 from the merger between the Faculty of the Built Environment and the Engineering Faculty. The School today comprises of a vibrant community of approximately 700 students and 32 members of academic and administrative staff. We strive to attract the best students and to engage with them in ways they find academically challenging. We are committed to producing graduates who will leave the School confident of their career choice and able to contribute to the national economy and development of the real estate and construction industry. This approach allows our graduates to develop their chosen career path in ways that enable them to make a difference. We currently produce the highest number of graduates in our field in South Africa. Fortunately, we have a team of dedicated teaching and administrative staff to support students throughout their time here. The University of Witwatersrand has offered building science and quantity surveying courses since 1928. Up until the 1960s, the Quantity Surveying and Building Science programmes were housed in different departments. The Department of Building was established in 1969. The Department of Quantity Surveying arose out of the original Department of Architecture and Quantity Surveying in 1965 and operated as an independent Department within the faculty until it merged with the younger Department of Building Science in 1992. Both departments contributed to the development of South Africa’s building and construction industry through the influence of their graduates. The changing environment of the 1970s and 1980s brought with it the need for a change in the operation of the two departments and in 1992 they were amalgamated to form the Department of Building and Quantity Surveying in which the two streams operated on closely interwoven but essentially parallel lines.
