More than 170 years of hotel history tells the fantasy. Imagine what has happened here between the thick walls of the fine old Hotel Royal! Which of the previous times celebrities has been walking here, been eating here and maybe even slept in the same room as you? It is exciting to think of. Some things however do we know rather precise. Part of the building can be dated back to the 13th century, where the town hall of Aarhus was placed where Hotel Royal is today. Drawings of Hotel Royal from 1838 as a fine white building placed opposite the cathedral still exist. The building is clearly marked with “Hotel Royal”. This was the first Hotel Royal in Aarhus, whom innkeeper Niels Larsen arranged in the building originally named “The kings court”. The court, which was built in 1798, was bought from furrier Michelsen. He also bought the neighbor yard in Rosensgade, which allowed him to build the buildings together in the first of a long row of reconstructions and extensions to Hotel Royal.
