Program to Aid Citizen Enterprise (PACE) is a nonprofit organization offering innovative programming by leveraging a data-informed approach and 50 years of capacity-building experience to determine how to best meet the needs of communities that have been marginalized. Born out of the tragedy of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the resultant civil uprisings in Pittsburgh, PACE was created in 1968 to support the creation and growth of nonprofit organizations in the African American community. PACE was formed through a partnership of the United Fund and the Community Chest (forerunners of the United Way of Allegheny County), the Health and Welfare (Planning) Association, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and key leaders in the African American community. Since its inception, PACE has provided over $15 million in grants plus technical assistance to over 450 nonprofit organizations in isolated and neglected areas of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania. Community jewels we have supported include: Amachi Pittsburgh, Brothers and Sisters Emerging, Dress for Success Pittsburgh, Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, Kingsley Association, Macedonia F.A.C.E., Manchester Bidwell Corporation, Operation Better Block, Prevention Point Pittsburgh, Reading is FUNdamental, The Legacy Arts Project, Veterans Place of Washington Blvd, and many more. Mission: To advance a more equitable community by increasing the capacity of individuals, groups, and organizations that challenge injustice. Vision: We envision a future where BIPOC communities that have been marginalized are able to thrive through sustaining partnerships with healthy community-based nonprofit organizations.
