Sandtable is a data science company that specialises in creating models of human behaviour. We use them to help organisations understand what might happen in the future and how they can best adapt to or influence that future. Our models are built using a technique called Agent Based Modelling (ABM). We bring together data and insight from a range of sources to create explicit representations of the populations we are trying to understand. They are not ‘black boxes’ – we are seeking to uncover and represent the underlying causal mechanisms that make people do what they do. Our models consist of: - A population of agents – to represent the attributes of people within the real population - A set of rules - to govern the behaviour of those agents - An environment – to capture the relevant influences on behaviour Our models are virtual populations that will respond, as far as the data, insight and understanding allows, in the way a real population might in a range of future scenarios. We are working with a range of organisations to address strategic problems from public health to shopper loyalty. Managing, validating and exploring such models is a complex and highly iterative process. To support it we have developed the Sandtable Model Foundry – a cloud based system to create, maintain and deploy our models. The Sandtable Model Foundry allows us to deliver models that are more thoroughly validated and more comprehensively explored than would otherwise be possible in a reasonable timeframe.
