Ikamva Design is a social enterprise creating job opportunities for artisans in Cape Town's township communities. Ikamva Design addresses the problem of poverty and social isolation among women in Cape Town’s townships neighbourhoods. Many older women live in extreme poverty and they support large families on their pension of just R1,780 per month - the seniors are often the sole breadwinner in the household. An extra income makes a huge difference, it gives dignity and independence and helps to meet basic needs such as to provide nutritious food and a more stabil upbringing for their grandchildren. Ikamva Design is working together with 700 mamas at Ikamva Labantu’s senior clubs, to create and develop market oriented and innovative craftwork and find business in South Africa and beyond.
