Geography and Description The Festus R-VI School District serves a geographical area of approximately 36 square miles in east central Jefferson County. The district is located in the city of Festus, which has a population of 11,602. The district is comprised of one elementary school (grades K-3), one intermediate school (grades 4-6), one middle school (grades 7-8), and one high school (grades 9-12). History On June 7, 1949, school consolidation was approved by voters in Jefferson County Missouri. The first Board of Education meeting as Reorganized School District R-VI was held on June 30, 1949. The R-VI district is composed of the former districts of Hematite, Haverstick, Bailey, Festus (District #48), and portions of the Douglass, McNutt, and Horine districts. Festus started its first high school in 1901 as a two-year high school. The first graduating class of 1902 was composed of nine girls and one boy. This two-year high school continued until the 1913-14 school year when Festus had a three-year high school for one year. The first four-year class graduated at the end of the 1914-15 school year.
