Shelton is a unique organization comprising the following major entities: School Evaluation Center Speech Clinic Training Center Founded by Dr. June Ford Shelton in 1976, Shelton has grown in over 35 years to serve 850 students, and serves as an international demonstration, resource and research center. A staff of 250 readily shares Shelton's services and knowledge with all who inquire. The school serves students with learning differences including dyslexia and related disorders, and ADHD. Students with dyslexia have challenges with reading, decoding, spelling and written expression. Other students may have difficulty with reading comprehension, math, written expression, and often struggle with organization and attention. The school provides specific instruction/remediation for students pre-school (3 years of age) through 12th grade. Theatre, music, art, library and PE/athletics enhance the total school program. Shelton Scholars, a one-on-one tutoring program for reading, runs on Saturday mornings during the school year, and in the summer during July. The low cost for this program allows students from all economic levels to receive help. The Outreach and Training Center, headed by Nancy Coffman, provides teacher training in a variety of programs including SEE, Alphabetic Phonics, and Montessori Applied to At-Risk students.
