The Music and Human Rights Project involves both carrying out research on the multifaceted relationship between music and human rights, and implementing its applied projects in response to the current civilizational transition that some systems theorists call the Great Turning. Today’s transition compares in magnitude to that of the agricultural revolution 12,500 years ago and the industrial revolution beginning 300 years ago. MORE Today’s third revolution of the human species responds to a global system structured around growth and dominance on a finite earth where increasing numbers of global citizens acknowledge the idea of human rights, communicate about them, and make claims on them. This system now bends under its own weight of mutually reinforcing inequality, deadline-imposing climate change, and violence including nuclear threat. Humanity has the opportunity to employ its unprecedented tools of knowledge and communication to participate in directing the transition’s course, rather than suffer results imposed by default. MORE The project shows that music and human rights as such tools, ones often conjoined in struggles for justice, survival, and dignity, can contribute to life-sustaining outcomes if understood systemically and dynamically in their complexity and possibility. Our life and evolution depend on such understanding. The project makes this complexity and possibility comprehensible by focusing on the inherently human phenomena of music and rights. It makes it immediately concrete by facilitating its citizen projects in the state of Illinois and the nation of Jamaica.
