The Backpacks Foundation strives to help underprivileged students obtain a satisfactory education and achieve academic success. The organization delivers backpacks furnished with school supplies to such students, appropriate for their respective grade levels (K-12), in order to ensure that the students are prepared with the tools necessary to succeed. The organization was formed in August 2006 when a group of family and friends recognized the financial burden many families face when buying supplies to prepare for the new school year. Since 2007, the organization has raised more than $30,000 and donated more than 2,000 backpacks to school districts and charities in the New York metropolitan area. The organization is legally incorporated in New York State and has 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
