Supporting the Care and Settlement of Newcomer Children CMAS provides early childhood professionals with the information and tools they need to support the settlement of young immigrant and refugee children. We identify gaps in service and work to create solutions; establish and measure the standards of care; and support services for newcomer families through resources, training and consultations. Funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), CMAS was founded in 2000 to monitor and support the childminding services offered alongside Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programs. Since then, the organization continues to evolve to keep current in meeting the needs of newcomer families. Over the years, we have developed and delivered: • over 50 different conferences and workshops have been offered to caregivers and administrators, both within and outside of the settlement sector • over 10 online training modules and e-courses for administrators and caregivers working with newcomer children • resources for early childhood professionals who wish to better serve immigrant and refugee families and provide high quality child care. • standards and requirements for child care, as well as models for monitoring and supporting LINC Childminding, OCC, and most recently, Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) programs CNC was developed through consultation with stakeholders across Canada and features high safety standards as well as quality programming, language learning, creating an inclusive environment, and managing the effects of culture shock. CNC not only meets the unique needs of children who are new to Canada, but also allows immigrant serving organizations to design the type of care that best suits the needs of the newcomers they serve.
