Contact: [email protected] Founded in 2009, Empowering Through Education (ETE) Camp seeks to prepare Hinche, Haiti’s most vulnerable youth (over 250 participants) to become future community leaders for social change by strengthening their academic skills, increasing self-confidence, and actively building community and parental support. ETE Camp’s youth programs’ enrollment is organized in partnership with local schools whose student body reflects restaveks (child laborers), orphans, and children from impoverished families. The program provides its participants with 2 meals a day, snacks, camp T-shirts & bag, and supplies for school, arts & crafts, and recreation. It also features academics classes: literacy, leadership, math & engineering classes. ETE Camp hosts annual events such as an open house, community-wide closing celebration, a concert, mural painting, movie nights, and a parade. The nonprofit collaborates with the adult community by provides opportunities for employment and a steady source of income for cooks, a custodians, junior counselors, counselors, and community liaisons. ETE Camp is also a proud supporter of many local micro-enterprises. The initiative's support and advocacy work on behalf of the Hinche youth extends to the United States. The thirty-six (36) American volunteers who have traveled to Hinche to support the organization’s program include university professors, teachers, Haitians, non-Haitians, high school and college students. Currently, entering its 15th consecutive year, ETE Camp has served over 300 youth participants, worked with over 60 adult learners, recruited 36 volunteer camp staff members, and hired 22 native Hinche residents. ETE Camp is established as a 501(c)(3) organization that commits to providing lifelong supports that aspires to assist in evolving Hinche’s most vulnerable population into educated, confident leaders.
