The primary outreach for CANDLE, Inc. is the Reality Tour Drug Prevention Program - an innovative, community-based prevention experience for parent and child to attend together. It was created by Norma Norris, of Butler, PA, so that parents and children could see the progression and consequences of drug abuse and become aware of the coping skills needed to prevent experimentation.The program has continued monthly since 2003 at the original site in Butler, PA and expanded to 8 other states. Tens of thousands of parents/youth have experienced the 3-hr comprehensive program presented by volunteers. In 2011 CANDLE Inc.'s Reality Tour was added to the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. CANDLE representatives were invited by NREPP to take part in a discussion on advancing evidence-based programs in June of 2011. In 2010 CANDLE developed the Family Health Policy subscription program for parents to engage their children in cooperative home drug-testing as a routine health measure. CANDLE sends random notifications and provides educational materials to enrolled parents. Enrollment is via CANDLE's website. CANDLE developed the SmartZone curriculum for middle school and junior high school students in 2011 to provide a focus on positive behaviors of drug-free youth. It is appropriate for Red Ribbon Week with a celebration assembly included.
