SEED (South Africa)
www.seed.org.zaSEED is an award-winning non-profit and public benefits organization operating from Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats, with a national scope to its schools-based outdoor learning program and increasing recognition for its Rocklands Urban Abundance Centre in Mitchells Plain. Our work is rooted in the sustainable land design system of Permaculture. Our work over the last decade has been in response to an expressed need in under-resourced schools in South Africa. We have worked alongside teachers to develop a program that comprehensively addresses the need for inspiring learning environments and for teaching materials that link on-ground work to the curriculum while feeding hungry learners. We are currently running a national schools program that is operating in six nodes, with teacher support being implemented in all provinces. In addressing these issues, we have found that our work responds to the accelerating crisis of the environment and also offers solutions to challenges like the need for dignified sustainable livelihoods, local food production and community resilience.
