The Commission works for a free, fair, safe and just New Zealand, where diversity is valued and human dignity and rights are respected. The Commission is New Zealand's National Human Rights Institution and holds an A accreditation which allows speaking rights at UN Convention and Treaty bodies. The New Zealand Human Rights Commission is an independent crown entity, and operates under the mandate of the Human Rights Act 1993.
