Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Vienna

www.ihs.ac.at

Research at IHS is characterized by its interplay of academic and project oriented nature and is organized along three key research areas: "Economy, Markets, Governance," "Polarization versus Cohesion of Society," and "Innovation and Societal Change", which highlight three overarching social challenges that IHS tackles through relevant, evidence-based and scientific contributions. IHS conducts scientific project in several countries; project funding stems from competitive research grants (e.g. Horizon 2020 and FWF - Austrian Science Fund) as well as contract research with contracts from public institutions and companies (e.g. European Commission, Ministries, NGOs). IHS prepares quarterly economic forecasts for the Austrian economy for the current and following year. In addition, once a year a medium-term forecast for economic developments in Austria for the next five years are presented. IHS has specially developed tools and models for working with large amounts of data. This can be used, for example, to model consequences of changes in the tax system or to illustrate the economic interdependencies of sectors, regions and companies - an overview is available at ihs.ac.at/models. European consortium projects such as EUROSTUDENT or the European Social Survey (ESS) are examples of the pivotal research undertaken at IHS. IHS is the national coordinator for the ESS, a pan-European survey of attitudes, preferences and behavior patterns of the European population in more than 30 countries. For early career researchers, there are also opportunities to pursue doctoral training and gaining a PhD. Early career researchers formally study at a university but are involved in ongoing research projects at IHS.
