The Northvolt–Volkswagen joint venture was established in 2019 with the principal intent to establish the Northvolt Zwei lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany. One of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, Northvolt Zwei is currently under development – the gigafactory is slated to come online in early 2024 to provide an exclusive supply of sustainable battery cells to Volkswagen in order to advance the company’s ambitions for offering clean, zero-emissions vehicles. Northvolt Zwei takes its design from the Northvolt blueprint for battery manufacturing developed for Northvolt Ett, located in northern Sweden. Consequently, it will share much in common with its sister factory, including a minimal CO2 footprint, heavily automated processes and advanced cell manufacturing techniques. Start of construction at Northvolt Zwei is slated for 2021, and start of operations scheduled for early 2024. The factory is designed to have an initial annual cell output of 16 GWh.
