Geographically, it is close to East Asian countries, which are developing at a significant pace. Since the modern period, the city has developed as one of the major industrial cities and an international trade port. Even now, Kitakyushu boasts one of western Japan’s highest concentrations of industry and manufacturing, and the city has many technological advantages. It is also an international logistics base, which enjoys an enhanced sea port, airport, railway, and highway infrastructure. In the downtown area, public parks and water recreation spaces are built adjacent to business and commercial areas, so that people can enjoy both city life and relaxation. The city is rich in nature as well. It faces the ocean with 210 km stretch of coastline and about 40% of the city’s area is forested. Kitakyushu, which overcame severe pollution in the 1960s, has a mission to utilize the experience it gained in this process, and to use its environmental technology for the conservation of the environment of this planet. It has facilitated its implementation of environmentally focused international cooperation for years.
