It is an unfortunate accident of town planning history that rural areas globally have been somewhat disconnected from the development opportunities in urban areas. The Covid pandemic has forced people to interact from their homes, and suddenly, rural and urban became less material if good connectivity was in place. The movement of communication and information is done via good internet access, and if in place, the playing fields of location become level. It is out of this reality that Village Connection was born. The reliable movement of goods needed to be added to good home office connectivity, and thereby goods manufactured or sourced from outlying areas would face no barriers to entry if scheduled reliable transport to main hubs was in place. Gijima saw this as an opportunity to bring freight from and to marginalised towns into mainstream distribution hubs and be the Village Connection with a no-road shedding service people could rely on. To this end, we have developed relationships with driver /entrepreneurs to own the delivery rights to particular towns and use their local knowledge to deliver into areas not officially recorded on address book type infrastructure and give their products access to The Richards Bay /Empangeni hub that connects with South Africa and the globe from a distribution perspective. We have started our programme and created success stories fleshing out this concept and creating rural distribution entrepreneurs at the same time
