From May 2022 until August 2022, artist Imran Nuri will be driving to all 48 of the continental US states (and DC) to photograph 1,000 strangers on his 50-year-old film camera, asking each of them the question, "What do you know now that you wish you knew earlier?" In other words, he is compiling 1,000 pieces of practical life advice with beautiful portraits for anyone to enjoy and benefit from. Strangers give the best advice because they have no reason to hold back the brutally honest truth. After all, they don't know Imran, he doesn't know them or their network, and there's pretty much no way that he could use what they tell him against them. By asking strangers the question, "What do you know now that you wish you knew earlier?" Imran is giving them the opportunity to share what they had to learn the hard way without fear of judgment or repercussions. Imran's friends and family know that he has a special ability to make anyone feel comfortable with him which leads to both better stories from strangers, but also portraits that look more natural because the subjects feel at ease with him. Imran will be living out of his trusty 2018 Toyota Camry and the cost of the entire trip, on an extremely tight budget, will be between $5,000 and $7,500.
