Cyclist.ie - The Irish Cycling Advocacy Network
www.cyclist.ieCyclist.ie is the member for Ireland of the Brussels-based European Cyclists' Federation (ECF). Cyclist.ie is an NGO for everyday cycling promotion on the Island of Ireland. It is a federation of the regional cycling campaigns, bicycle festivals and greenway groups. It seeks to re-establish a strong cycling culture in Ireland, particularly for those short trips for work, school, college and shopping and socialising around neighbourhoods. In other words trying to 'normalise' everyday cycling. Everyday cycling in Ireland has been marginalised by a dominant motorised culture and so a large part of our work is trying to bring about social change that will see citizens leaving the car keys behind for that short trip to the local shop for the litre of milk. Its work has to be seen in the context of making our towns and cities more ‘liveable’ and the reality that 26% of our 9-year olds are already overweight/obese from insufficient active travel – very few children are permitted by parents to walk or cycle to their schools.
