The work appeared with the educator Hermann Gmeiner, in Imst, Austria, with the initial objective of welcoming orphaned children, victims of World War II. Over time, the scope of action has been expanded, with programs for families, communities, advocacy and actions aimed at health and nutrition, educational centers and the promotion of women's rights, in addition to assistance in emergencies. Currently, in 133 countries and territories, SOS harbors children in vulnerable situations, who have lost or are about to lose parental care.
