The 500 Supporters' Group raises funds to assist with health & education projects at the Ruben Centre (www.rubencentre.org), an Australian-backed and Australian-led not-for-profit organisation situated in the Mukuru slums, 10km from the centre of Nairobi. The slums are built upon land that was initially used as a dump and today they are home to over 600,000 people who live in make-shift, 10 feet by 10 feet corrugated shacks. The Ruben Centre aims to improve the living standards of the slum's residents by providing services in key areas such as: EDUCATION - though operation of a school with almost 2,500 students NUTRITION - lunch is provided every day, often the only substantive meal these children will receive COMMUNITY - social work programs, micro finance and programs to target the reduction of child labour HEALTHCARE - approximately 60,000 people were immunised, HIV tested, counselled, and otherwise treated in the medical clinic in 2014 Our fundraising is done almost solely via the two sporting lunches we organise each year: • an AFL Lunch, held in May • a Spring Racing Lunch, held on the Tuesday before the Melbourne Cup
